Getting started with the adoption process is not easy.  It will benefit you to do as much Home Study and research as possible. I know people who have worked in the adoption industry for many years and many of them have told me that deciding on an attorney is extremely difficult yet important. Being without an adoption attorney is like a blind person leading a blind person. Things can get messy without one and it would be in your best interest to get the best attorney your money can buy.

Choosing an adoption attorney or an international adoption attorney (if you were looking into adopting overseas) could make or break your adoption proceedings.  Make sure you get the right one because there are specific laws that you must follow for specific places. The situation can get even more complex if the birth family live in one area and the adoptive family lives in another area or country. This is considered a domestic or an international adoption. Not only are you dealing with laws of your state, but also different countries. This is why having a lawyer is essential for your success in bringing that new member home to your family.

This article is not intended on scaring away potential adoptive parents, but just a warning for you to get your priorities in order. I know a family who wanted to adopt overseas, but they wanted to represent themselves by going to that country without an attorney or some type of representation. Well I need not tell you it was a big mess. They ended up getting an international adoption attorney without doing their homework. They paid out a lot more than they had too if they would have taken proper precautions.

You should find out what are the stipulations for adopting in your state or area before you even begin to think about adoption.  Too many people think adopting is just going to some farm and picking the child you want, and then you are on your way home.  It is a lot more complicated than that. This is why I stress having an attorney present at all of your proceedings.

Always check the qualifications of an adoption attorney, or an international adoption attorney. In addition, it would not hurt to talk to families who have used them before. It is also good to talk with other parents who have adopted to see which attorneys they used and to find out if they had encouraging or unhelpful experiences. An attorney can make or break an adoption depending on how he handles it. You do not want to take chances when it comes to you and your families’ happiness. You should always find an attorney that will follow the domestic and international laws completely when it comes to your adoption proceedings.
